The Mobile World Congress has exceeded expectations in terms of visitors, officials say.
As many as 55,000 people had been expected to attend the foru-day Congress, which covered all aspects of the mobile telecommunications industry.
However, by the end of just the second day of the event, more than 55,000 people had already visited the exhibition.
Officials said 49,000 visitors attended the event in 2010.
Barcelona will host the 2012 event and is among four finalist competing to host the MWC between 2013-2017. Barcelona will have to fend off challenges from Paris, Munich and Milan, which all want to host a congress that leaves around 300 million U.S. dollars in the city’s economy every year.
This year’s MWC has benefited from live keynote speeches featuring the CEOs of companies such as Microsoft, Twitter, and Google. The App Planet, which ran alongside MWC for the second year, featured more than 200 exhibitors and a dedicated developer stream.
